The ingredients needed to make Dal Makhni:
  1. Prepare 1 cup whole black lentils
  2. Prepare Handful red kidney beans
  3. Take as required water for soaking and boiling
  4. Take For tadka
  5. Take 2 onions finely chopped
  6. Prepare 2 tbsp ginger garlic green chilli paste
  7. Prepare 2 tomatoes pureed
  8. Make ready 1 tsp red chili powder
  9. Prepare 1 tsp turmeric powder
  10. Prepare 2 tsp Coriander powder
  11. Make ready 1 tsp garam masala powder
  12. Take 1 tsp cumin powder
  13. Prepare 1 tsp cumin seeds
  14. Get 1 bay leaf
  15. Prepare 2 tbsp oil
  16. Take 1 tbsp butter
  17. Prepare As needed salt
  18. Prepare As needed water for adjusting consistency
  19. Make ready As needed butter for garnishing
  20. Prepare As needed cream for garnishing
  21. Prepare Handful chopped coriander leaves
Steps to make Dal Makhni:
  1. For Boiling lentils.
  2. Firstly, wash and soak together whole black lentils and red kidney beans for around 8-10 hours or overnight.
  3. Now pressure cook the dals by adding a bit of salt and water for 3-4 whistle on High flame and after that lower the flame and let the dal cook for 35-40 mins.
  4. For Tadka
  5. In a heavy bottom pan heat oil and butter. Now add cumin seeds let it crackle then add a bay leaf.
  6. Now add ginger garlic green chili paste and saute till the raw aroma of garlic disappears.
  7. Now add chopped onions and saute till it's golden brown in color.
  8. Now add tomato puree and mix well.
  9. Now add all the dry masalas - red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, and garam masala powder. Saute well till oil separates from the sides.
  10. Now add the cooked lentils and adjust both salt and water consistency.
  11. Cover and cook the dals for 10-15 mins.
  12. Now add coriander leaves from above and switch off the flame.
  13. Before serving add butter and cream.
  14. Serve hot with Jeera Rice or Butter Naan.
