The ingredients needed to make Dal khichdi:
  1. Take 90 gm Rice
  2. Prepare 150 gm Toor Dal
  3. Prepare 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  4. Make ready Pinch asafoetida
  5. Make ready 2 Whole Green Cardamom pods
  6. Prepare 2 Bay Leaves
  7. Make ready 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  8. Get 1 stp Mustard seeds

  11. Get 1 Onion finely chopped
  12. Prepare 1 Green chilli Finely chopped
  13. Make ready 1 Tomato finely chopped
  14. Take 1 Ginger blended to a paste
  15. Take 3 cloves garlic pasted
  16. Prepare 1/2 tsp chilli powder
  17. Prepare to taste Salt
  18. Take 50 ml water
  19. Get As required Coriander to garnish
Steps to make Dal khichdi:
  1. Soak the rice and dal in plenty of water for 20 minutes. Drain and add both to a sauce pan along with 1.2 litres of warm water, turmeric and asafoetida.
  2. Bring to a boil and simmer over a low heat cooking the dal and rice for 35 minutes
  3. Once cooked turn the heat off. Cool slightly and using a potato masher mash roughly.
  4. In a large sauce pan heat the ghee or oil over a medium flame. Add the mustard seeds,cardamom pods, bay leaves and cumin seeds fry for a few seconds.
  5. Now add the curry leaves followed by the onion. Fry for 3-4 minutes until it goes light brown. Stir well and add the green chilli followed by the ginger paste and garlic paste and fry for a minute.
  6. Add the tomato and continue to fry over a low heat for 4 minutes; as they begin to soften add the chilli powder and stir well.
  7. Add the mashed dal and rice and season the khichdi. Stir, add water and simmer on a low heat for 2 minutes.
  8. Turn the heat off, garnish with coriander and rest for a few minutes. And it is ready to eat - You can also use fried onions for garnishing
