The ingredients needed to make Ven Pongal/ Kara Pongal:
  1. Make ready 2 cups raw rice
  2. Prepare 1 cup moong dhal
  3. Take 8 cups water
  4. Make ready 1 1/2 cup milk
  5. Make ready For Tempering–
  6. Make ready 2 tsp cumin / jerram seeds
  7. Prepare 2 tsp crushed pepper
  8. Get 3 sprigs curry leaves
  9. Prepare 3 tbspn cashews
  10. Get 2 tbspn ginger (chopped)
  11. Take 1/2 cup ghee
Instructions to make Ven Pongal/ Kara Pongal:
  1. Wash moong dhal 3 times.In a pressure cooker, add 3 tspn ghee and roast moong dhal till raw smell disappears. Add the washed rice and water.
  2. Add salt and turmeric powder. Cook for 4- 5 whistles. Cool completely and open.
  3. Add milk and mix well. Check salt. For tempering heat the remaining ghee add pepper and cumin seeds.
  4. After it cracks add ginger and cashews. Roast till cashews are golden. Finally add curry leaves and turn off the stove.
  5. Add tempering to pongal and mix well. Serve hot with sambar and coconut chutney.
